Abstract

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a central nervous system (CNS) disorder with underlying autoimmune mechanisms, marked by immune-mediated destruction of the myelin sheath of axons.  MS has a complex genetic, metabolic, and immune etiology and pathophysiology, which imposes challenges for successful treatment strategies.  The present document discusses the genetic and environmental risk factors of the demyelinating disease and illustrates the OMICS approaches for a deeper understanding of the etiology of MS.  The application of OMICS approaches provides information about the different biomarkers associated with MS and forms the basis for prognostic, diagnostic, and therapeutic tools.
