Abstract

Abstract:

The rise of the Metaverse—an immersive, interconnected virtual environment—is reshaping expectations around project management practice and leadership. This study explores how Metaverse technologies influence project communication, collaboration, visualization, and decision-making, and how these shifts redefine the role of the project manager. A qualitative research design was adopted, involving semi-structured interviews with 15 professionals across project management, digital transformation, and immersive technology domains, complemented by a review of literature and three early adoption case studies (Hyundai, Accenture, BMW).

Findings show that Metaverse-enabled environments enhance real-time interaction, strengthen stakeholder engagement, and support agile decision-making through improved visualization and shared virtual workspaces. Participants reported gains in team cohesion and problem-solving efficiency. However, challenges were also identified, including technological complexity, cybersecurity concerns, steep learning curves, and evolving competency requirements. The study highlights a growing need for digital fluency, adaptive leadership, and new capability frameworks for project managers operating in virtual contexts.

While still emerging, Metaverse integration marks a significant shift in project management practice. The research recommends piloting controlled implementations, developing tailored training, and embedding immersive technologies into future-ready professional standards. This work contributes to the evolving discourse on technology-driven project leadership and sets a foundation for deeper investigation into virtual collaboration ecosystems.
