AI - 5G Convergence in Smart Manufacturing: A Conceptual Framework for Next-Generation Manufacturing
- Dr. Kanayalal Rania Inc.
Abstract
The convergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and fifth-generation (5G) communication technologies is reshaping modern manufacturing systems. This conceptual study examines how the integration of these two enabling technologies transforms smart factories into highly connected, intelligent, and adaptive production environments. It highlights the complementary roles of AI-driven analytics in enhancing decision-making, predictive maintenance, and process optimization, alongside 5G’s provision of ultra-reliable, low-latency connectivity required for real-time control and seamless human–machine collaboration.
The study further identifies digital twins, edge computing, and cyber-physical systems as foundational technologies supporting this convergence. Together, these elements enable continuous monitoring, autonomous adaptation, and cross-domain data exchange within complex industrial settings. Key challenges related to infrastructure readiness, data security, and interoperability are also discussed as critical barriers to large-scale adoption.
Overall, the paper positions AI–5G convergence as a cornerstone of next-generation manufacturing, enabling factories that are not only more intelligent and efficient but also sustainable, resilient, and human-centric. The study concludes by outlining future research directions, including the transition toward 6G networks, human–AI co-creation, and ethical frameworks shaping the evolution of Industry 5.0.
